Probating utility bills and credit cards
As you go through the process of sorting and proving all things, assume that
the old man has died and you are the executor of the Will. You must close out
everything.32 Let’s look at the old man’s clothes. They’re easy to
probate because there is no paperwork on clothes. You can just give them to the
new man. You have just acquired a dead man’s clothes. Most people do not carry
papers on furniture, household goods, computers, and pianos so you can easily
acquire these from the old man, too.
Utility bills and other monthly obligations of the old man must be paid. A
new account under the new name is opened for those services that are to be
retained.
Credit cards are paid in full and then canceled. You won’t want to bring
those liabilities into the Kingdom. When Rachel and I were probating the old
people, we paid off our credit cards, cut them up and sent them back with a
letter saying we were canceling our account. We told them Our Lord had
instructed us that we are to owe no man anything but the continuing debt to love
one another.33 Therefore, we can no longer accept credit. Even six
months after we canceled our credit cards, they continued sending us offers. We
finally called them and complained. They said it takes six to seven months to be
removed from their mailing list.
Don’t neglect to change your utility bills to the new name. You want all
references to the old man to disappear. Having monthly bills addressed to the
new man helps give him credibility.
